What is Tweening?

 WEDS, Oct 12th

“Tweening,” or “inbetweening,” is how animators get things from one point to another.

WHAT IS TWEENING?

Animation has always been about the illusion of movement. Tweening is a major part of making that illusion look real. Tweening in animation is a short for inbetweening, and it’s the process of generating images that go between keyframes.

Keyframes are the images at the beginning and end of a smooth transition. For example, an animated character could appear to jump from one point to another. That character would be clearly defined in each keyframe, but between those two frames, the figure could look distorted or stretched to fit with the motion and direction.

In the early days of animation, a main animation artist would draw the keyframes and another artist, the inbetweener, would create the frame-by-frame animation between those keyframes. With current computer animation, the process is much easier, and much less time- and labor-intensive.

Here is a great Tutorial explaining how to create a tween in the WICK Editor App

Assignment: Tweening Example #1

You will create a bouncing ball animation with a background with a 2nd element moving in the sky and a reacting shadow on the ball.

Watch the following tutorial. You will change the colors he uses to create your own bouncing ball animation. This animation will have 3 Elements using the TWEEN action, the ball, the shadow, and the sun or another element that you create in the background

Instructions: (follow the video tutorial)

  1. in Editor Settings, Choose 720, and choose a background color of your choice (you do not need to use the color he chooses in the video)
  2. Follow the steps to create your bouncing ball using the TWEEN function (you can use any type of ball, for example, basket, tennis, beach ball)
  3. Create a background using shapes and pencil and paint tools. DO NOT download background from the internet. I want you to draw your background in Wick.
  4. Add shadow to the bouncing ball with a TWEEN
  5. Create the Sun element (or your own idea, such as a moon, UFO, flying cow, twinkling starts, etc.) using a TWEEN
  6. SAVE Wick file
  7. EXPORT as Video (mp4) and POST to your Google Assignment
  8. Post Video in Minor Assignments on your Blog - LABEL IT: TWEENING EXAMPLE #1
  9. DUE: WEDS., 10/12 End of Block
